Generic Name: Promethazine - Rectal Suppository
DESCRIPTION
This medication is used to prevent nausea and vomiting. Also used as
a sedative.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING
You may take 1 or 2 every four hours, as needed for nausea and vomiting.
Unwrap suppository. Lie down on your left side with your right knee bent
(if left-handed, lie on your right side with your left knee bent). Push
the suppository into the rectum with your finger. Remain lying down for
a few minutes and avoid having a bowel movement for an hour or longer
so that the medication will be absorbed. Do not use more of this medication
than is prescribed.
SIDE EFFECTS
May cause drowsiness, dizziness, or thickening of mucous. Less frequent
effects include blurred vision; dryness of the mouth, nose, and/or throat;
feeling faint; sensitivity to the sun; decreased sweating; and increased
appetite. Notify Dr. Roberts if you develop shortness of breath, flushing
in the face, muscle spasms, or itchiness.
PRECAUTIONS
Do not consume alcohol while using this medication. Phenergan may cause
increased sensitivity to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen
and avoid sunlamps.
Consult your obstetrician prior to taking this medication if you are
pregnant or nursing.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Phenergan may interact with other medications. It is extremely important
for you to inform Dr. Roberts of all medications that you take prescription
and over-the-counter.
If you are taking anti-depressants, drugs to treat an overactive thyroid,
lithium, or narcotic pain medication, Dr. Roberts will advise you on any
changes you need to make while taking Phenergan.
OTHER INSTRUCTIONS
Use extreme caution performing tasks that require alertness. Use sugarless
candy or gum for relief of dry mouth. For motion sickness, use 30-60 minutes
before traveling.
If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered. Do not take if it is
almost time for the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume
your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch
up.
Refrigerate away from light and moisture.
